Regent Secondary School, Abuja, has earned a prestigious place among the world’s elite British international schools after being rated ‘outstanding’ in all nine inspection categories by British Schools Overseas.
The inspection, commissioned by the UK Department for Education and conducted by Penta International, evaluated education quality, student welfare, leadership, and overall school management. The assessment placed the school as the first and only secondary school in Nigeria and West Africa to attain this level of excellence.
Dr. Mark Evans, who led the inspection, described the school’s educational approach as “broad, innovative, and child-centred.” He noted that students consistently perform above global standards, with 98% achieving A-C grades in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, nearly half of them earning A* or A grades.
Beyond academic excellence, the inspectors commended the school for its strong moral and cultural values. Regent Secondary School upholds the core principles of ‘Respect, Responsibility, and Resourcefulness,’ which are deeply embedded in its curriculum and student development programs.
The school’s boarding facilities were also described as “exemplary,” providing students with a safe, comfortable, and nurturing environment. Inspectors highlighted that boarders feel secure and well-supported, contributing to their academic and personal growth.

Leadership and management were identified as key strengths of the institution. The report praised the school’s strategic vision and commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring a thriving environment for both students and staff.
Philip Reynolds, Principal of Regent Secondary School, described the recognition as a defining moment for the institution. He credited the collective efforts of students, teachers, parents, and the leadership team for fostering a high-achieving learning community.
“This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to excellence,” Reynolds stated. “It is a testament to the dedication of our students, the passion of our teachers, and the support of our parents in creating an outstanding educational environment.”
This milestone follows the success of Regent Primary School, which achieved the same ‘Outstanding’ rating in 2023, making it the first and only primary school in West Africa to receive such recognition.
The school’s reputation for excellence was further solidified at the 2024 Cambridge Awards, where it was recognized for producing the highest number of top-performing students in Nigeria. With this latest achievement, Regent Secondary School has set a new benchmark for quality education in West Africa.
