The Trans Niger Pipeline, a key federal transport route, carries oil to the Bonny Export Terminal in Rivers State.
In response to inquiries, Grace Iringe-Koko, the state Police spokesperson, stated she would investigate the incident and provide further information.
The cause of the blast remains uncertain, with authorities investigating whether it resulted from sabotage or an operational fault. The incident comes amid heightened tensions following threats from militant groups protesting the Federal Government’s decision to withhold Rivers State’s allocation.
The Trans-Niger Pipeline, which channels crude oil to the Bonny Terminal, is a vital export route for Nigeria’s oil industry. Past incidents of pipeline damage in the region have been linked to oil theft and vandalism, raising concerns about security and environmental risks.
In recent weeks, a militant group, the Niger Delta Rescue Movement, issued warnings against any interference with Rivers State’s funds, threatening to disrupt oil production. The group also urged non-indigenes to leave the state, signaling potential unrest in the region.
Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and assess the extent of the damage. Meanwhile, security measures may be reinforced to prevent further disruptions to oil operations in the area.
