U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have taken a step toward de-escalating the ongoing war in Ukraine, following a phone conversation that led to a temporary ceasefire on energy and infrastructure targets.

Trump described the discussion as “very good and productive,” highlighting that both leaders agreed to work swiftly toward a broader ceasefire to end what he called “this very horrible war.”

While Putin did not commit to a complete 30-day ceasefire, he agreed to suspend attacks on critical infrastructure. In return, Moscow demanded an end to U.S. military support for Ukraine—an issue that remains a major point of contention.

The leaders also agreed to a prisoner exchange, with Russia set to release 23 severely wounded Ukrainian soldiers as part of the arrangement. However, tensions flared shortly after the agreement, as reports emerged of an attack on Ukraine’s Sloviansk energy grid, raising concerns about Russia’s commitment.

Trump, who claimed the war would never have started under his administration, expressed optimism that a peace deal could be reached. “This process is now in full force and effect, and we will, hopefully, for the sake of humanity, get the job done,” he stated.

Despite the diplomatic breakthrough, skepticism lingers as Ukraine closely watches Russia’s next moves. With battlefield conditions still volatile, the world awaits whether this ceasefire marks the beginning of lasting peace or just another temporary pause in the conflict.
