Edo Governor, Monday Okpebholo has declared a State of Emergency in the state’s public schools, citing their deplorable condition.

The announcement came after a visit to schools in the Ikpoba-Okha and Egor local government areas, where the governor expressed concern over the poor state of urban educational facilities.

Accompanied by state officials, Okpebholo toured Army Day Secondary School in Ikpoba-Okha and Evbareke Secondary School in Egor, voicing his dissatisfaction with the environment in which students are learning. He emphasized that children in Edo deserve better facilities to unlock their full potential.

During the visit, the governor recalled his campaign promise to address the lack of modern facilities in schools across the state. “I promised to declare a State of Emergency in schools that are lacking proper infrastructure,” Okpebholo stated. “Starting with these two schools, we will begin immediate renovations.”

At the schools, he highlighted critical issues such as the absence of fencing and the erosion-damaged road leading to Army Day Secondary School, which he described as a major barrier to students’ access to education.

Edo’s Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, reinforced the governor’s commitment, stating that the visit was aimed at assessing the challenges faced by students firsthand. “The governor is here to understand the situation and find real solutions. He is dedicated to ensuring all children, including those with disabilities, have access to quality education,” Iyamu said.

Meanwhile, the Vice Principal of Evbareke Secondary School, Mrs. Mary Izewingie disclosed that the school’s condition had not improved since 2022, despite repeated appeals for help. “We’ve made attempts to fix things ourselves, but the rain has undone our efforts. Learning has become increasingly difficult for our students,” she lamented.

Governor Okpebholo  assured that improvements would begin immediately, promising to prioritize education as a key area of reform.
