Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has apologized to former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili following a heated confrontation during a Senate hearing on Tuesday.
The apology comes after a tense disagreement between Ezekwesili and Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi of Ebonyi North at the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges session.
During the hearing, which focused on sexual allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Ezekwesili and Nwaebonyi engaged in a fiery dispute.
The situation escalated when Ezekwesili told the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate to “shut up,” prompting Nwaebonyi to call her a “hooligan.”
In response, the former minister described him as a disgrace to the Senate, while the lawmaker accused her of being a disgrace to womanhood.
Acknowledging the events that transpired, Akpoti-Uduaghan took to her 𝕏 handle on Wednesday to express gratitude to Ezekwesili for her resilience.
She commended the former minister’s dedication to accountability and governance, describing her as a leader who inspires many Nigerians.

“Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, Ma’am, I apologize for the insults. Know you took them for me… for us … as a mother and as a leader. Know that you are a true icon of integrity, courage, and visionary leadership,” she wrote.
She further praised Ezekwesili’s contributions to education, democracy, and public service, calling her a champion of accountability.
The apology comes amid growing conversations about the conduct of lawmakers during the Senate hearing. Ezekwesili’s insistence on being heard at the session had triggered resistance from some senators, leading to the exchange with Nwaebonyi.
The heated dispute temporarily disrupted proceedings before the committee chairman adjourned the hearing indefinitely.
With the apology, Akpoti-Uduaghan has sought to acknowledge Ezekwesili’s role in advocating for justice and transparency. Her statement reinforces ongoing discussions about the need for civility in legislative proceedings and respect for differing opinions in Nigeria’s democratic space.
