A raging fire outbreak has once again hit Onitsha, Anambra State, causing widespread panic among residents and business owners. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, started at Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, leaving many in distress as thick smoke engulfed the area.

The Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call around 6:20 am, prompting an immediate deployment of firefighters to the scene. Emergency responders quickly mobilized to combat the inferno, working to prevent further spread and destruction. The Fire Service, through its Media and Publicity Unit, assured the public that the situation was under control despite the intensity of the flames.

Firefighters have since continued efforts to completely extinguish the fire, deploying four firefighting trucks to the location. With the support of sister agencies and concerned members of the public, firemen are making frantic efforts to contain the situation and salvage properties at risk. Several videos from the scene showed the massive flames consuming structures while responders worked tirelessly to prevent further devastation.

Eyewitnesses in the area reported that residential buildings and warehouses near the Onitsha Main Market and its surroundings had been affected. Many traders expressed fears over the extent of the damage, with some alleging that goods worth millions of naira had been lost in the fire. The Fire Service has urged residents to remain calm while efforts are being intensified to bring the situation under total control.

This latest outbreak comes just two days after another fire incident rocked the Iweka Road area, near Ochanja Market. The previous inferno, which started on Tuesday, March 25, at about 9:40 pm, kept emergency responders on their toes throughout the night. Firefighters battled the flames for hours, preventing the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings. Despite their swift response, four shops dealing in furniture materials such as leather and foam were affected before the fire was completely put out by 3:05 am the following day. The cause of that fire remains under investigation.

The recurrence of fire outbreaks in Onitsha has raised serious concerns among residents, with many questioning the underlying causes and the effectiveness of fire prevention strategies. The Fire Service has reiterated its readiness to respond promptly to emergencies but emphasized the need for residents and business owners to take proactive fire safety measures. They urged the public to ensure electrical installations are properly maintained, fire-prone materials are stored safely, and emergency numbers are always accessible.

While acknowledging the efforts of the Fire Service, residents have called on the government to intensify fire prevention measures, particularly in densely populated and commercial areas of the city. Many have suggested stricter regulations on fire safety compliance for businesses, increased public awareness campaigns, and improved emergency response infrastructure to curb the rising cases of fire outbreaks.

As firefighters continue battling the flames at Ifejika Street, authorities have assured the public of their commitment to protecting lives and properties. Updates on the situation are expected as emergency responders work round the clock to fully extinguish the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
