The Christian Association of Nigeria,CAN, 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of 16 travellers in Uromi, Edo State.
In a joint statement issued on Sunday in Kaduna, CAN Chairman Rev. John Hayab and Secretary-General Bishop Mohammed Naga expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a heinous crime against humanity. They extended condolences to the families of the victims, acknowledging the pain and anguish they must be enduring.
The Christian body also congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the successful completion of Ramadan. It highlighted the spiritual significance of the holy month, noting that its teachings promote peace, discipline, and selflessness among the faithful.
CAN stated that the loss of innocent lives is a tragedy that should unite Nigerians in their quest for justice. It urged security agencies and the government to carry out a thorough investigation and prosecute those responsible without delay.

The association called for calm in the wake of the incident, warning against retaliatory attacks. It cautioned that revenge would only escalate tensions and lead to more suffering, especially for innocent people caught in the cycle of violence.
CAN also condemned divisive rhetoric that seeks to generalize crime based on religion, ethnicity, or region. It urged Nigerians to reject such stereotypes, emphasizing that criminals should be treated as individuals rather than representatives of a particular group.
Security agencies were tasked with ensuring that justice is served transparently and swiftly. CAN stressed that only through diligent law enforcement and a strengthened justice system can Nigeria overcome the challenge of recurring violence.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to peace, unity, and justice, calling on Nigerians to work together in building a society free from violence and fear. It emphasized that collective efforts toward fairness and accountability would create a safer nation for all.
