A planned rally in Akwa Ibom, purportedly in support of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has been dismissed by the lawmaker, who urged his supporters to steer clear of the event.

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media Matters, Jackson Udom, Akpabio stated that he had no connection with the organisers and was unaware of the rally. The statement, titled “Disregard Any Rally in Akwa Ibom Purported to Be in Support of Senate President Godswill Akpabio,” cautioned that the event might have an ulterior motive.

The rally, reportedly arranged by a group known as Progressive Peoples’ Resolution and led by Ubong Idemudo, was scheduled to take place on April 4. Akpabio, however, distanced himself from both the event and its organisers, describing Idemudo as a controversial figure.

“The President of the Senate is not aware of any rally organised in his support at any venue in Akwa Ibom and therefore urges his supporters and the peace-loving people of Akwa Ibom State to disregard such rally and go about their lawful duties,” the statement read.

Concerns were raised that the rally might be an attempt by certain individuals to exploit Akpabio’s name for personal or political gains. The Senate President’s office claimed to have gathered information suggesting that the event was orchestrated by “fifth columnists” with ulterior motives.

Calling for security intervention, Akpabio warned that the rally could disrupt peace in the state. He directed security agencies to ensure that the gathering did not take place, stressing that it lacked his endorsement.

“The Police and other security agencies in the state are by this statement directed to ensure that such satanic rally is not allowed to hold, as such has no approval of the Senate President,” the statement emphasized.

With this strong disapproval, Akpabio made it clear that he would not associate with any unauthorised political gathering in his name, urging the public to disregard such events and focus on their lawful activities.
