Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has stepped down from his position as Special Adviser on Political Matters in the Office of Vice President Kashim Shettima. The resignation, which reportedly took place two weeks ago, comes at a time when political activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election are gaining momentum.

Baba-Ahmed, a former spokesman for the Northern Elders Forum, was appointed to the advisory role in September 2023. His involvement in the administration was seen as a strategic effort to strengthen political engagement within the government.

While no official reason has been given, Baba-Ahmed cited personal grounds for his departure. His exit has sparked speculations within political circles, especially considering his influence in shaping the administration’s political strategies.

It remains unclear whether the presidency has formally accepted his resignation. So far, there has been no statement from the Office of the Vice President or the presidency, leaving room for further uncertainty about the implications of his exit.

During his tenure as adviser, Baba-Ahmed was involved in notable political discussions, including a public dispute in April 2024 with Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle. The disagreement highlighted internal tensions within the administration, particularly on matters of loyalty and policy direction.

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, Baba-Ahmed’s resignation introduces a new dynamic into Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. Observers and stakeholders will be watching closely for further developments and possible reactions from the presidency.
