The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has rescinded the earlier invitation issued to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi in respect of investigations on the Durbar crisis in Kano.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Saturday, disclosed that the IGP has directed the Kano State Police Command to obtain the Emir’s statement within the state.
This development followed interventions by influential stakeholders who were alarmed by the controversial approach of the IGP.
Adejobi noted that the decision was taken to prevent a misinterpretation of the gesture and to ensure the ongoing investigation remains neutral and professional. The police chief emphasized his commitment to fairness while ensuring that no action by the force would be politicized.
The initial invitation stemmed from an investigation into a violent incident that disrupted the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Kano. Despite a state government directive banning durbar processions for security reasons, Emir Sanusi reportedly led a procession that drew a large crowd, heightening tensions in the city.
The unrest reached a tragic climax when a group of individuals attacked members of the Emir’s security detail. Surajo Rabiu, a vigilante from Sabon Titi Jaba Quarters, was fatally stabbed during the dispersal from the prayer ground, while another, Aminu Suleman from Kofar Mata Quarters, sustained injuries. One of the attackers, Usman Sagiru, is currently in police custody.
The police command has intensified efforts to unravel the cause of the violence and ensure justice.
Part of this includes inviting the Shamakin Kano, Alhaji Wada Isyaku, for questioning as authorities continue to gather statements and piece together the events that led to the fatal incident.
