Southampton have been relegated from the Premier League following a 3-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

The defeat leaves them at the bottom of the table with just 2 wins and 25 losses this season.

With only 21 points left to play for, they are now 22 points behind 17th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers, making survival mathematically impossible.

This relegation marks the earliest confirmed drop in Premier League history, with seven games still remaining in the season.

The previous record was held by Derby County in the 2007–08 season and Ipswich Town in 1994–95. Both clubs had their relegations confirmed with six matches to go.

Under the management of Ivan Juric, the Saints struggled throughout the campaign. Their current record stands at 2 wins, 25 losses, and a league-high number of defeats.

With 19 goals scored and 75 conceded, Southampton’s goal difference and overall performance contributed heavily to their early exit.

The result against Tottenham saw Southampton unable to match the intensity of their opponents. Despite a brief push for a comeback, their defensive lapses allowed Spurs to take full control of the match. This was Southampton’s 16th home defeat of the season.

Southampton now face the challenge of preparing for life in the Sky Bet Championship next season.

The club will be aiming for a quick return to the top flight but must address the issues that plagued their campaign, including squad depth, defensive fragility, and goal-scoring inefficiency.

At the top of the table, Liverpool currently lead with 22 wins while Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, and Chelsea remain strong contenders.

In contrast, Southampton’s fate is now sealed, becoming the first club to be officially relegated this season.
