The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, has distanced itself from the ‘Take It Back Movement’ nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, calling for peace, especially among the youth.
The Nigeria Police Force had previously urged the organizers of the planned protest to reconsider, describing the timing as ill-conceived and mischievous.
In a statement released on Sunday in Kaduna, Isah Abubakar, the National President of NYCN, emphasized the need to prioritize peace and unity during the country’s current fragile state, particularly in Northern Nigeria, which is vulnerable to further unrest.
“We wish to stress the need to prioritize peace and unity during these critical times. We are urging Nigerian youths to explore alternative and non-violent means to express their concerns. We are deeply concerned about the escalating tensions across various regions and the current socio-political climate,” Abubakar stated.
He assured that NYCN remains committed to empowering and developing Nigerian youths, despite the frustrations and aspirations they may have. Abubakar further noted that the nation needs calm, dialogue, and patience rather than actions that could destabilize the fragile peace many patriotic Nigerians are working hard to maintain.

While recognizing the legitimacy of the grievances that have prompted calls for protests, Abubakar stressed that peace and national stability should remain the highest priorities. Reflecting on the recent ‘End Bad Governance’ protests, he expressed concern over the loss of lives and properties worth millions of Naira, recalling that the protests had been hijacked by hoodlums and miscreants.
“No one desires a repeat of such tragic events,” he said.
Abubakar emphasized the importance of unity and urged Nigerian youths to advocate for their rights through peaceful and constructive engagement rather than protests. He called for young Nigerians to come together in solidarity, supporting one another to foster lasting change.
He reiterated the NYCN’s commitment to working with government agencies and stakeholders to ensure that the voices of the youth are heard through peaceful and appropriate channels.
