The United Nations, UN, and the African Union, AU, are strengthening efforts to align the AU’s Agenda 2063 with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs Agenda 2030.
Ms Botho Bayendi, Director of the Office of Strategic Planning and Delivery at the AU Commission, highlighted this in a statement by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, UNECA.
She said the initiative, known as *Two Agendas, One Framework*, aims to harmonise Africa’s long-term development blueprint with global goals to improve implementation at national levels.
Bayendi spoke on the sidelines of the 11th Session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development, which is taking place from April 7 to 12 in Addis Ababa
She stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the UN and the AU, noting that both organisations focus on similar development indicators.

Dr Said Adejumobi, Director of the Strategic Planning, Oversight and Results Division at UNECA, noted that Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030 overlap by 80 per cent, making it essential to jointly implement both frameworks.
He said the UN system, through its Resident Coordinators in every African country, will lead the national-level rollout of the STYIP in line with the *Two Agendas, One Framework* approach.
Yacoub El-Hillo, Regional Director of the UN Development Coordination Office, applauded the growing collaboration, citing the *College-to-College* strategy — a joint coordination mechanism on peace, security, development, and humanitarian action — as a major success.
Ambassador Maes Ennio of Côte d’Ivoire, representing Agenda 2063 Champion President Alassane Ouattara, said the AU-UN synergy could be a driving force for Africa’s transformation.
He emphasised the significance of the 2018 Memorandum of Understanding signed between UN Secretary-General António Guterres and AU Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat, calling it a cornerstone of current joint efforts.
He added that the event also aims to integrate the priorities of the STYIP into the UN Country Teams’ Common Country Analyses and Cooperation Frameworks, to better align national development strategies with both the continental and global agendas.
The forum brought together all UN Resident Coordinators across Africa and key development partners. It was jointly organised by the AUC, UNECA, UNDP, AUDA-NEPAD, and the UN Development Coordination Office, under the Technical Working Group for the STYIP.
