In a new twist to the ongoing war in Eastern Europe, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed the capture of two Chinese nationals who were fighting alongside Russian forces in the Donetsk region.

The announcement came on Tuesday via his official Telegram channel, where he shared a video showing the identity documents, bank cards, and personal data of one of the detained men.

Zelensky stated that the two Chinese citizens had been actively engaged in combat operations against Ukrainian troops in the eastern part of the country.

Their capture by Ukraine’s SBU security service adds a new dimension to the conflict, now in its fourth year, which has already drawn in several foreign elements.

Describing the incident as far from isolated, Zelensky claimed there are “many more such Chinese citizens” embedded within the Russian occupying forces.

He said intelligence reports suggest a growing number of foreign fighters being recruited by Moscow, in what he called a deliberate strategy to prolong the war.

In response to the discovery, Zelensky has tasked Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha with demanding an official explanation from the Chinese government.

“This is a clear signal of Putin’s intention to escalate and extend this war,” he said, urging global powers to treat the development with seriousness.

“This absolutely requires a response from the U.S., Europe and everyone in the world who wants peace,” Zelensky stressed.

The presence of Chinese nationals on the battlefield, he warned, could have significant diplomatic implications if left unaddressed by international stakeholders.

While North Korean troops have previously been reported fighting for Russia, this is the first confirmed instance involving Chinese citizens.

On the other side, Ukraine continues to benefit from the support of thousands of foreign volunteers and sustained military aid from Western allies.
