Senate President Godswill Akpabio says the National Assembly is fully prepared to support the overhaul of Nigeria’s outdated laws and implement critical reforms, especially within the Nigeria Police Force.

Akpabio, represented by Deputy Senate President Sen. Barau Jibrin, made this known during the Police Service Commission Board/Strategic Session and a four-day induction programme in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking at the event themed “Enhancing the Key Standards of Corporate Governance,” Akpabio emphasized the Senate’s readiness to provide legislative backing for essential reforms that aim to professionalize the police and instill public trust.

“The National Assembly stands ready to review outdated laws, approve essential reforms, and provide the oversight needed to ensure a people-oriented police force,” he said.

He stressed the need to shift from a system riddled with mediocrity and favoritism to one driven by merit, discipline, and integrity. Akpabio also advocated for community policing models that prioritize empathy, conflict resolution, and public engagement, drawing comparisons to successful systems in countries like Japan and Finland.

“Police reform requires courageous disruption,” he said, citing Singapore’s transformation anchored in transparency, merit-based promotions, and accountability.

On performance, Akpabio suggested introducing a reward system for police officers who embody ethical values. “The officer who rejects a bribe today must not return home without hope. In the long run, integrity must be worth more than corruption,” he noted.

He further congratulated the newly inaugurated PSC board, calling their appointment a sacred trust and a mandate to serve.

Earlier, PSC Chairman Retired DIG Hashimu Argungu explained that the event aimed to familiarize board members with their oversight roles and deepen accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.

Argungu also proposed the creation of a Police Short Service Institution, similar to that of the military, to recruit more professionals into the force.

In his remarks, Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, represented by Special Adviser on Security Retired DIG Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, praised the PSC for deploying effective police leadership to the state, helping to maintain peace and security.

The event concluded with awards presented to Akpabio, Eno, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and other prominent Nigerians for their contributions to national security and public service.
