Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has marked the 2025 International Workers’ Day with a renewed call to protect the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers.
Speaking during the May 1st celebrations in Port Harcourt, Fubara emphasized the vital role workers play in national development and pledged continued support for policies that ensure fairness, dignity, and decent working conditions.
“Today is a reminder that workers are the backbone of our economy and society. We must not only celebrate them but also stand firm in defending their rights,” Fubara said.
He called on employers across both public and private sectors to uphold labor laws, prioritize safety, and offer fair compensation and job security. He also highlighted the state government’s recent efforts to improve the civil service, including the prompt payment of salaries and pensions, and capacity-building initiatives for public servants.

The governor reassured workers of his administration’s commitment to continuous engagement with labor unions and the implementation of reforms aimed at enhancing workforce productivity and satisfaction.
Fubara also used the occasion to encourage dialogue and cooperation between labor and government, noting that resolving disputes through constructive engagement is key to progress.
Workers’ Day celebrations in Rivers State featured parades, speeches by labor leaders, and renewed pledges to advocate for improved welfare, particularly in light of rising living costs and inflation.
