Pope Francis gave his life savings—€200,000—to prisoners in a final, deeply personal act of love for those he called his “brothers behind bars.”

The donation was not just financial, but symbolic of a lifelong commitment to the forgotten. It came during the last weeks of his life, when illness and age had weakened him physically but not dimmed his resolve to uplift society’s most marginalized.

Bishop Benoni Ambarus, auxiliary bishop of Rome and director of the Office for Prison Pastoral Care, described the gesture as the clearest reflection of Francis’ pontificate.

“A few days ago, the Holy Father dragged his body to Regina Coeli,” he said, recalling the pope’s final Holy Thursday visit to the Roman prison on April 17.

From the very start of his papacy, Francis made headlines by visiting prisons, washing the feet of inmates, and urging governments to implement humane reforms.

Despite years of heartfelt appeals, little institutional action followed. “Institutions did nothing to give even a small signal,” Ambarus lamented.

In the pope’s final months, that passion only deepened. He approved the opening of a Holy Door at Rebibbia prison — a sacred rite previously reserved for major basilicas — allowing inmates to symbolically walk through a threshold of grace and renewal.

The initiative, proposed by prisoners themselves, has since grown into a full pastoral movement involving priests, volunteers, and religious sisters who now visit twice monthly.

Francis also supported prison outreach from his own pocket. When asked about funds amid tight Vatican finances, he quietly said, “Don’t worry, I have something in my account,” and transferred the entire sum.

Following his death, prisoners sent Ambarus a flower and a letter to place on the pope’s tomb, mourning not just a religious leader, but a father figure who never abandoned them.

Fittingly, Francis left behind no wealth. His burial was paid for by a benefactor — the final proof of a life poured out entirely for others.
