The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has confirmed the arrest of Hon. Muhammed Gudaji Kazaure, a former member of the House of Representatives, in connection with alleged illicit financial transactions with the embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

Kazaure, who represented the Kazaure, Gwiwa, and Yankwashi Federal Constituency of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023, was taken into custody on May 8, 2025, following the recent lifting of a court order that had previously restrained the anti-graft agency from apprehending him.

According to EFCC insiders familiar with the investigation, the arrest was carried out in Kano, where Kazaure is currently being held in detention pending further legal proceedings.

The EFCC alleges that Kazaure received a total of ₦70 million in cash from Mr. Emefiele through a third-party intermediary.

The funds were purportedly disbursed in two main tranches—₦20 million allegedly earmarked for the purchase of Sallah rams and ₦50 million said to be a “personal donation” following a fire incident that damaged parts of Kazaure’s private residence.

Investigators are reportedly scrutinizing whether these funds were legal disbursements, or part of a broader scheme to curry political influence and shield financial dealings from public scrutiny.

While neither Kazaure nor his legal representatives have publicly commented on the charges, sources within the EFCC indicate that the former lawmaker may soon be transferred to Abuja, where formal charges could be filed.

A prosecutorial team is already reviewing the evidence for possible violations of Nigeria’s anti-corruption and money laundering laws.

This development adds another layer of controversy to the turbulent political and financial history shared between Kazaure and Emefiele. In 2022, Gudaji Kazaure was at the center of a political storm after making explosive claims that the CBN had mismanaged ₦89 trillion in stamp duty revenues—an allegation he said was based on findings of a presidential committee he claimed to chair.

The Presidency, however, swiftly dismissed Kazaure’s accusations, describing the alleged committee as unauthorized, unofficial, and disbanded.

Government officials at the time asserted that no such amount existed in the banking system, noting that the entire asset base of Nigerian banks did not even reach ₦50 trillion.

Critics accused Kazaure of making misleading statements to stir political drama and tarnish the reputation of key government institutions.

Despite the federal rebuttal, Kazaure’s claims captured public attention and reignited concerns about transparency within the Nigerian financial system.

He became a polarizing figure—celebrated by some for allegedly challenging entrenched financial powers, and criticized by others as a reckless populist peddling misinformation.

The current EFCC investigation, however, suggests a different narrative. Agency officials believe that Kazaure’s accusations may have been intended to distract from his own financial dealings with Emefiele. One source close to the investigation said

“What we are looking at is the possibility that Kazaure was not just a whistleblower, but a willing participant in financial impropriety. These funds were not officially documented, and the explanations given so far are not convincing.”

The case has already triggered public discourse around corruption, the political use of whistleblowing, and the blurred lines between personal relationships and state institutions.

It also underscores the growing efforts of the EFCC to investigate financial misconduct at the highest levels, regardless of the political status of those involved.

Godwin Emefiele, who led the CBN from 2014 until his suspension in mid-2023, is himself facing multiple charges related to abuse of office, unauthorized financial transfers, and foreign exchange mismanagement.

His tenure, once hailed for stabilizing the naira and boosting financial inclusion, ended in controversy amid growing allegations of fiscal mismanagement and overreach.

Analysts say the arrest of Kazaure could strengthen the EFCC’s broader case against Emefiele by revealing the extent of his alleged network of beneficiaries and collaborators. “This arrest opens a new front in the investigation,” said Dr. Aminu Zubair, a political economy expert at Bayero University. “The narrative has shifted from abstract accusations of mismanagement to concrete allegations involving cash transfers, which are easier to prosecute.”

As Nigerians await further developments, the case is expected to generate intense public and media scrutiny, especially given its political implications ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kazaure remains a vocal public figure, and his involvement could have ripple effects for political alliances and reputations, particularly in northern Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the EFCC has urged the public to remain patient and allow the legal process to unfold. “Our duty is to the truth and the rule of law,” said an official statement from the agency. “Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. But no one is above accountability.”
