The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a final-year student of Ekiti State University, EKSU, Helen Kayode, for allegedly orchestrating her own abduction in a bizarre attempt to spend time with her boyfriend without interference.
According to the police, Kayode, who was set to graduate this semester, had disappeared from her family’s home earlier in the week, prompting her relatives to raise an alarm. They subsequently received a distress message claiming that Helen had been kidnapped, with the supposed abductors demanding ransom.
The case was reported to the police, and a swift investigation was launched. Using mobile tracking technology and intelligence gathering, operatives of the command traced Helen to a location in Ado-Ekiti, where she was found safe and in the company of her boyfriend.

Spokesperson for the Ekiti State Police Command, DSP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued Thursday. He described the act as not only illegal but dangerous, noting that it had wasted valuable security resources.
“She was never kidnapped. It was a staged scenario. We tracked her to a residence where she was hiding with her boyfriend. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and criminal,” Abutu said.
The police have not yet disclosed whether Helen will face prosecution, but they warned that the force would no longer tolerate false alarms or deceptive tactics that endanger public trust and distract from real threats.
The case has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some users criticizing the student for irresponsibility, while others expressed concern about mental health and social pressure among young adults.
