The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has sealed off a registered water plant in Lafia, Nasarawa State, after discovering it was operating beyond its licensed scope and producing multiple unapproved water brands.
Mr. Anga Emmanuel, Deputy Director and Head of the NAFDAC Lafia office, disclosed the development during a press briefing held on Friday, May 9, 2025. He said the factory, originally licensed to produce only “Mainima Table Water,” had been caught producing at least five different unregistered water brands in a gross violation of safety and regulatory standards.
According to him, the illegally manufactured brands—Bilal Table Water, Agbeni Table Water, Nkonjun Table Water, and Anumzi Table Water—are not linked to the Lafia factory and were not registered under its name.
“Bilal and Agbeni were registered in Doma Local Government Area, Nkonjun in Akwanga, and Anumzi in Sanga LGA of Kaduna State,” Emmanuel said. “This means the operator not only overstepped his license but also attempted to impersonate other brands.”

The operation was uncovered during a routine inspection, during which one Mr. Christian Chukuma was arrested in the act. Emmanuel said Chukuma had rented the premises and operated without the knowledge of the original owner. He also revealed that the factory’s license had expired, and the facility no longer met basic compliance requirements.
“This is not only fraudulent but a threat to public health. Such actions mislead consumers and compromise safety,” he stated.
NAFDAC immediately sealed the premises, confiscated the illegal products, and vowed to prosecute the suspect. The agency emphasized that such violations would not be tolerated, as they undermine efforts to ensure safe consumption of food and beverages nationwide.
Chukuma, while confessing to the act, cited economic hardship as his motivation and pleaded for leniency. He claimed the factory owner was unaware of his operations.
Emmanuel urged members of the public to report suspicious or unlicensed factories operating in their communities, as NAFDAC intensifies surveillance across Nasarawa and neighboring states.
