Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has revealed plans to rename the historic M.K.O. Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta to reflect its recent transformation into a state-of-the-art multi-sport facility.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abeokuta, the governor announced that the newly upgraded complex should henceforth be known as the M.K.O. Abiola Sports Complex.

According to Governor Abiodun, the renaming is not merely a symbolic change, but a testament to the stadium’s evolution from a modest football pitch to a world-class, multi-discipline sports venue.

“It used to be just MKO Stadium, with only a pitch and track. Now, it has everything – it is world-class,” he said, recalling a recent conversation with Nigerian football legend, Segun Odegbami.

The upgraded facility now includes a newly installed tartan track, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, modern tennis and handball courts, and a fully re-grassed football pitch, all in readiness for Ogun’s hosting of the 22nd National Sports Festival.

The investments are part of a broader agenda to reposition Ogun State as a national hub for sports development, youth empowerment, and economic stimulation through sporting activities.

Governor Abiodun emphasized the administration’s view of sports as more than just entertainment. “Sports creates jobs, builds discipline, and fosters unity. It’s a tool for development,” he said.

The M.K.O. Abiola Stadium, originally commissioned in 1988, has played host to prestigious tournaments, including the CAF Women’s African Cup of Nations finals and the WAFU Championship.

It was also once home to teams such as Gateway Football Club and the famed Abiola Babes International Football Club.

The stadium is named in honour of the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, a prominent businessman, philanthropist, and the acclaimed winner of Nigeria’s annulled 1993 presidential election.

Known for his deep passion for sports, Abiola’s legacy continues through multiple national monuments bearing his name, including the national stadium in Abuja.

Governor Abiodun’s renaming proposal is viewed as both a nod to this rich legacy and a declaration of Ogun State’s growing ambitions in the world of sports.
