The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, has lauded he Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, ANPA, for its dedication to uplifting Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, described ANPA’s effort as a “true act of patriotism,” applauding the group’s impact during a medical mission that reached thousands of underserved Nigerians in Lagos and Oyo States. The commendation came via a statement issued by Mr. Gabriel Odu of NiDCOM’s Media, Public Relations & Protocols Unit.

During the mission, ANPA provided free medical care to over 3,000 residents of the Ikate community in Lagos State. The outreach featured a wide range of services, including screenings and treatments for chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, gynecological issues, and various cancers.

The medical team also conducted over 350 surgeries — including more than 150 eye operations for cataract and glaucoma, 250 dental procedures, and complex surgeries like hernia and gallbladder removals. In addition to direct care, more than 250 Nigeria-based physicians received advanced medical training, boosting local expertise and sustainable healthcare delivery.

Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa highlighted that ANPA members, many of whom are leaders in U.S. healthcare systems, exemplify the positive impact of the Nigerian diaspora. She expressed hope that their consistent intervention would help curb Nigeria’s reliance on outbound medical tourism.

“This is not just about service; it’s about building systems and leaving lasting impact,” she said.

Dr. Cliff Eke, ANPA President, said the initiative was a meaningful way to give back to their homeland. “Our goals extend beyond charity. We’re here to improve healthcare delivery, influence policy, and empower the next generation of Nigerian health professionals,” he noted.

Also speaking, Dr. Lanre Jimoh, ANPA’s National Treasurer and a U.S.-based gastroenterologist, emphasized that the mission is part of a broader plan to establish a multi-specialty hospital in Nigeria. “Our focus is long-term: prevention, quality treatment, and continuous professional training,” he said.

NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to supporting diaspora-led health initiatives, stressing that partnerships like this are essential to Nigeria’s development goals. The agency also encouraged more structured engagement between Nigeria and its diaspora communities to ensure continued contributions to nation-building.
