South Africa’s U-20 national team secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nigeria on Thursday to book a place in the final of the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, held at the Suez Canal Stadium in Egypt.

The thrilling semi-final clash was decided by a powerful 66th-minute header from forward Tylon Smith, who rose above his marker to connect with a pinpoint corner delivered by Neo Rapoo.

It was Smith’s first goal of the tournament and came at a crucial time for the Amajita, as they held on to secure their second-ever AFCON U-20 final appearance — their first since 1997.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s dream of a record-extending eighth U-20 AFCON title. The Flying Eagles had hoped to reach the final after back-to-back semi-final exits in 2019 and 2023.

Despite dominating possession and attacking play, particularly in the second half, Nigeria could not find a way past South Africa’s resolute goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe.

Lowe was the star performer for the South African side, making critical saves in the final minutes to deny efforts from Emmanuel Chukwu and Israel Ayuma.

Nigeria made tactical substitutions in the 65th minute, bringing on Bidemi Amole and Rickson Mendos to intensify their attack, but South Africa’s disciplined defense stood firm.

The game began tentatively, with both sides trading cautious attacks. Early attempts from Nigeria’s Tahir Maigana and South Africa’s Kutlwano Letlhaku failed to trouble either keeper.

With this win, South Africa remain unbeaten at the Suez Canal Stadium and have now qualified for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Their attention now turns to winning their maiden continental title in the final.
