The family of Oba James Dada Ogunyanda, the Obalohun of Okoloke in Kogi State, has confirmed that his abductors are demanding a ransom of ₦100 million for his release.
The revered first-class monarch was kidnapped from his palace in the early hours of Thursday, sending shock and fear throughout the Yagba West Local Government Area.
Initial panic intensified when the kidnappers remained silent for hours after the abduction. However, late Thursday evening, contact was made with a family member during which the captors stated their demand.
A relative of the royal family, speaking under anonymity, disclosed that the kidnappers have given a three-day deadline to produce the ransom and have refused any negotiation.
“They switch off the phone before we can plead,” the relative said. “We’re completely overwhelmed. Where are we supposed to raise ₦100 million?”

The incident has sparked alarm across Kogi State, particularly in Okun land, where concerned residents have gathered in the palace for prayer vigils, urging government intervention.
The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the abduction and announced that a joint task force made up of police officers, military personnel, and local vigilantes has launched a rescue operation.
In response to the incident, Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West, raised an urgent motion on the floor of the Senate, calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to expedite efforts to secure the monarch’s release and reinforce security across vulnerable communities.
Senator Karimi also commended President Bola Tinubu for initiating the establishment of Forest Guards and called for swift presidential assent to the Nigeria Forest Security Service (Establishment) Bill, 2025 already passed by the National Assembly.
The security crisis adds to the growing concern over the resurgence of kidnappings in Kogi State and other parts of Nigeria.
