The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has reaffirmed the stability and resilience of the country’s banking sector despite growing public concerns following the Supreme Court’s recent ruling against Fidelity Bank Plc.

In a statement issued on Monday, the CBN assured depositors and stakeholders that the Nigerian banking system remains “safe, sound, and adequately capitalized.” The reassurance follows days of speculation over the potential impact of a ₦225 billion judgment debt on Fidelity Bank’s liquidity and long-term viability.

“The banking sector is strong and remains well-positioned to meet the financial needs of Nigerians and the broader economy,” the CBN said, emphasizing that it maintains close regulatory oversight of all financial institutions.

Although the apex bank did not directly reference Fidelity Bank’s legal troubles, the timing of the statement suggests an effort to ease public anxiety after the Supreme Court upheld a ruling compelling the bank to compensate Ibadan-based Sagecom Concept Limited.

Market observers had expressed concerns that the judgment, one of the largest financial penalties ever imposed on a Nigerian bank, could pose systemic risk. However, the CBN insists that Nigeria’s financial architecture is robust enough to manage emerging challenges without triggering a crisis.

As of now, Fidelity Bank has not publicly responded to the CBN’s statement.
