Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has approved the supply of routine antenatal medicines and related services under the state’s free antenatal and delivery initiative for the first half of 2025.
This initiative is part of a broader policy to provide free, accessible, and high-quality healthcare to all pregnant women in the state.
The governor’s administration has also made considerable investments in infrastructure and manpower. Five new general hospitals have been constructed and furnished with state-of-the-art facilities.
In addition, numerous primary healthcare centers have undergone comprehensive renovations, aimed at bringing medical care closer to rural communities.
More than 1,000 new health workers have been recruited, including doctors, nurses, consultants, pharmacists, and lab technicians.
These professionals will bolster the workforce in both urban and rural health facilities. The introduction of telemedicine is another innovation that allows patients in remote areas to access specialized consultations without long travel times.

Law Mefor, the Commissioner for Information, confirmed that the governor has also equipped the Ministry of Health with four new ambulances to improve emergency response services.
These ambulances will be deployed strategically across health districts to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates during childbirth.
In addition, work is ongoing at the ultra-modern trauma center at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital in Amaku Awka.
The trauma center is designed to handle complex emergencies and will serve as a referral hub for smaller hospitals across the state.
The governor has also greenlighted the reconstruction of the collapsed perimeter fence and drainages at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Nawfia.
Governor Soludo’s efforts have earned national recognition. He was recently honored as the best-performing governor in primary healthcare in the Southeast and nationally during the ninth Anambra State Executive Council meeting.
The state’s robust healthcare policies were also commended in BudgIT’s State of States 2024 Report, where Anambra ranked fourth in overall fiscal performance and sustainability.
These reforms are part of a broader vision by Governor Soludo to create a people-centered, efficient, and sustainable healthcare system.
He maintains that maternal and child healthcare must be free and accessible to all, not as a privilege but as a fundamental right.
Residents across Anambra have welcomed the initiative, noting its positive impact on maternal health. Advocacy groups and community leaders have also praised the government’s commitment, urging continued expansion and deeper integration of healthcare services at the grassroots.
