The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has issued a strong warning to Nigerians regarding the use of certain Dove-branded cosmetic products, following a European Union ban due to safety concerns.
In a public health alert issued on Saturday, NAFDAC cautioned that several Dove products—particularly soaps and deodorants—contain a hazardous chemical known as 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) propanaldehyde, commonly referred to as Butylphenyl Methylpropional.
The compound is associated with skin irritation, allergic reactions, and potential developmental toxicity, including risks to unborn children.
The alert, titled “Ban of Dove Hand and Deodorant Soap Due to Butylphenyl Methylpropional Contamination”, lists the specific products affected:
-
Dove Exfoliating Hand Soap (barcode: 8710447439227)
-
Dove Feo Go Fresh 50ml (batch no: 9212174)
-
Dove Invisible Dry 50ml (batch no: 9183646)
-
Dove Men + Care Silver Control Spray 150ml (batch no: 62867LD)
NAFDAC clarified that none of these products are registered in its national database, making their importation and sale in Nigeria illegal.
In addition, the agency emphasized that soaps are among items on Nigeria’s restricted import list and are ineligible for foreign exchange support, meaning their entry into the country violates multiple regulatory frameworks.
Importers, distributors, and retailers have been instructed to cease all distribution, marketing, and sale of the listed products immediately. Consumers are urged to stop using the=se items and surrender any remaining stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.

“This public alert is issued as a proactive measure to protect Nigerian consumers from exposure to harmful substances in cosmetic products,” said a spokesperson from the agency. “We remain committed to ensuring that only safe, quality products are available in our markets.”
NAFDAC also encouraged the public to report any adverse reactions resulting from the use of cosmetic or personal care items through its official communication platforms, including its MedSafety App, phone lines, or website.
The warning follows a wave of regulatory crackdowns globally on cosmetic products containing Butylphenyl Methylpropional. The European Union banned the substance in cosmetic products after scientific evidence linked it to hormonal disruption and reproductive toxicity, prompting many health agencies to follow suit.
NAFDAC’s alert comes amid increased scrutiny over the safety of imported personal care products and reinforces the importance of public vigilance when purchasing off-the-shelf beauty items. Consumers are encouraged to check labels, verify product registration, and consult NAFDAC’s list of approved items before use.
The agency reaffirmed its dedication to public health and promised continued enforcement actions against unauthorized or unsafe consumer goods.
