The Attorney General of the Federation, AGF,  and Minister of Justice has provided reasons for the federal government’s decision to withdraw criminal charges against the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank PLC, Mrs. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe.

In a statement on Monday by Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Assistant to the President on Communication and Publicity, Office of the AGF & Minister of Justice, it was explained that the charges were dropped to prevent a miscarriage of justice.

The statement clarified that after a thorough review of the case, it became necessary to discontinue the charges in the interest of justice and fairness.

The AGF’s office said:

“Our attention has been drawn to the reactions following the discontinuation of criminal charges against Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, MD/CEO of Fidelity Bank PLC.

“The Attorney General’s decision is a testament to the commitment of the office to uphold justice and fairness. As the Chief Law Officer of the Federation, the AGF has the constitutional authority to enter a nolle prosequi, thereby discontinuing prosecution where necessary to prevent injustice.

“Following a careful evaluation, it was determined that Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe was neither the account officer nor the Managing Director at the time the account involved in the alleged fraudulent activity was opened.

“The decision reflects the AGF’s responsibility to ensure justice is upheld without bias or external influence.”

The statement clarified that the withdrawal of charges does not absolve Fidelity Bank from the allegations, which are still pending before the court.

“This action should not be misconstrued as an exoneration of the institution involved. The legal process must be allowed to proceed without undue speculation. Those found guilty at any point will face the full force of the law”, said the AGF.

He emphasized that all steps taken are aligned with the rule of law and aimed at preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s justice system.
