In a historic milestone for Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has been elected Vice Chair of the International Telecommunication Union, ITU, Council for 2025.
This is the first time in nearly 50 years that Nigeria has attained a leadership position within the ITU Council, the United Nations agency responsible for global information and communication technology issues.
Reacting to his election, Dr. Maida expressed deep appreciation to ITU Member States and its leadership for the confidence placed in him.
“It is a profound honour to be elected Vice Chair of the ITU Council 2025. I thank the ITU leadership and Member States for this trust, and I look forward to working closely with Council Chair Ms. Cristiana Flutur and fellow Council members to advance our shared mission of inclusive digital development,” he stated.

Dr. Maida emphasized that the appointment comes at a critical time for global digital cooperation, underlining the importance of building a connected, secure, and sustainable digital future.
He pledged to use the platform to advocate for global collaboration around resilient infrastructure, meaningful digital access, cybersecurity, digital literacy, and the development of trusted public digital systems.
“This new responsibility presents an opportunity to build on the progress we’ve made while helping to shape inclusive digital policies that empower people everywhere,” he added.
The NCC chief also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, whose formal endorsement significantly contributed to Nigeria’s successful bid for the seat.
“I am grateful to His Excellency President @officialABAT for his formal endorsement ahead of my election to this position,” Dr. Maida noted.
He stressed that Nigeria’s national priorities particularly under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda closely align with the ITU’s mission to ensure that no one is left behind in the global digital revolution.
“From expanding connectivity in underserved areas to equipping young Nigerians with digital skills, our national objectives resonate with ITU’s mission. This role strengthens Nigeria’s voice on the global stage while deepening our digital transformation efforts at home,” he said.
Dr. Maida’s election is widely regarded as a significant boost to Nigeria’s influence in global ICT governance, offering a critical platform to shape policies and foster development in key areas of the digital economy.
