The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, has called on the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, to adopt a culture of national reputation building and management as a core part of its professional practice.

NIPR President, Dr. Ike Neliaku, made this appeal during his remarks at the 70th Anniversary Gala, Award Night, and Book Presentation of the NUJ held on Saturday in Abuja.

He expressed the NIPR’s pride in being associated with the NUJ during the celebration of this significant milestone. Neliaku also commended the NUJ President, Alhassan Yahya, for uniting past national leaders of the union to commemorate the occasion.

“I see three key aspects of the NUJ’s journey: a journey of responsibility since 1955 for Nigeria’s liberty, a story of relevance, and a story of resilience,” Neliaku said.

He stressed the importance of reputation, describing it as the most valuable asset for individuals, organisations, and nations.

“At a time like this, when some people are spreading self-serving narratives, we must resist and begin to tell our own stories in our own way,” he stated.

“The NUJ has a critical role to play in this national project. That is why we are partnering with the union to guard the reputation of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He further emphasized the need to focus media reportage on enhancing the nation’s image, saying: “It’s not just what you say, but how you say it. We have countless positive stories to share about the greatness of this nation.”
