The passing of H.E. Senator Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo at the age of 84 marks the end of an era for Kwara State and Nigeria’s democratic history.
A distinguished statesman, former Commissioner, Governor of Kwara State in 1983, Senator from 1979 to 1983, and Minister of Communication during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure, Chief C.O. Adebayo was a towering figure whose contributions to our nation’s development spanned decades.
My relationship with him dates back nearly thirty years, beginning when he served as a resource person during my tenure in the Kwara State House of Assembly in 1999.
His wisdom and experience were invaluable to us as young legislators that year, reflecting his enduring commitment to nurturing democratic values.
As a State Cabinet member, a Federal lawmaker, and later, a Governor, Chief Adebayo left indelible marks on Kwara’s development.

Also, his courageous stance during Nigeria’s democratic struggles, particularly his frontline role in the June 12, 1993 movement to restore Late Chief MKO Abiola’s annulled mandate, cemented his place as a true democrat who sacrificed much for the nation we enjoy today.
Beyond politics, he was a mentor and father figure to many of us. His insightful counsel and unwavering principles served as guiding lights throughout my political journey.
Indeed, Kwara has lost one of its brightest stars—a man who embodied the finest qualities of leadership: integrity, courage, and selfless service.
To his beloved family, the people of Kwara State, and all who mourn this irreplaceable loss, I extend my deepest condolences. May Almighty God grant us all the fortitude to bear this loss, and may He grant Baba Adebayo eternal rest.
