The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at 90, barely a year after ascending the throne as the 43rd paramount ruler of the historic city.

Oba Olakulehin reportedly died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, amid ongoing celebrations marking both his 90th birthday, celebrated on July 5, and the first anniversary of his coronation which took place on July 12, 2024.

The revered monarch had succeeded the late Oba Lekan Balogun, continuing the ancient lineage of rulers under the unique rotational system of the Olubadan chieftaincy.

A source close to the Olubadan-in-Council, who spoke anonymously due to protocol, confirmed the passing to The PUNCH. “We received the sad news this morning. The Olubadan has joined his ancestors. However, an official announcement is expected from the Oyo State Government.”

Another palace insider also disclosed that the Otun Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State and next in line to the throne, is currently outside the country. “Oba Ladoja has been informed and is expected to return home soon,” the source noted.

Although no official statement had been issued by the state as of press time, tributes have already begun pouring in from traditional institutions and citizens alike, many of whom remember the monarch as a peaceful and disciplined ruler who embodied the wisdom of age and cultural pride of Ibadanland.

Oba Olakulehin’s brief reign was marked by efforts to preserve the city’s rich Yoruba heritage while navigating modern governance realities. His tenure also coincided with increased collaboration between the traditional council and the Oyo State government under Governor Seyi Makinde.

The late monarch’s ascension was significant as he became king through the time-honoured Ibadan succession model, where titleholders gradually move up the chieftaincy ladder—a system widely regarded for its predictability and peaceful transitions.

Details surrounding funeral rites are expected to be announced in due course. Meanwhile, traditional protocols for succession are underway, pending the return of Oba Ladoja, who many expect will be formally declared the next Olubadan in the coming weeks.

The death of Oba Olakulehin has cast a pall over the city, with residents mourning the loss of a figure seen not only as a cultural leader but also a stabilizing force in Ibadan’s socio-political landscape.

More updates to follow as official confirmations emerge.
