Spanish authorities have indicated that excessive speed was the probable cause of the tragic car accident that claimed the lives of Liverpool and Portugal football star Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva.

The fatal crash occurred on July 3 in Spain’s Zamora province, just days after Jota, 28, celebrated his wedding. Police investigations have revealed that the vehicle likely exceeded the motorway’s speed limit before veering off the road, crashing, and bursting into flames.

According to a report by Spain’s Civil Guard on Tuesday, investigators found wheel marks at the crash site suggesting the car was moving at an unsafe speed at the time of the accident.

“All evidence points to a likely excessive speed beyond the road’s limit,” the statement said. It added that tests confirmed Jota was driving the car.

Initially, authorities suspected that a tyre blowout may have triggered the crash as the vehicle attempted to overtake another car. However, further analysis has led them to focus on speed as the main contributing factor.

The football world has been reeling since news of the accident broke. Jota, who had just tied the knot with longtime partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, left behind three children.

His brother, Andre Silva, 25, was also a professional footballer, playing as a midfielder for FC Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
