The All Progressives Congress, APC, has won all 57 chairmanship positions and 375 out of 376 councillorship seats in the just-concluded local government elections in Lagos State, according to the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC.
The election, held across all 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas on Saturday, saw the ruling party retain its stronghold in the state. LASIEC announced the results on Sunday, confirming the APC’s overwhelming victory.
However, in a rare political upset, the Peoples Democratic Party managed to snatch a councillorship seat in Ward D of Yaba LCDA. PDP’s candidate, Babatunde Dosunmu, defeated his APC rival to win the sole non-APC position. Interestingly, Dosunmu is a former APC member who defected to the opposition party shortly before the polls.
The commission described the election process as largely peaceful, though concerns were raised about low voter turnout and isolated reports of irregularities. LASIEC has not announced any reruns or cancellations and stated that the newly elected officials will be sworn in before the end of the month.

In total, the APC claimed control of all local councils in the state, further cementing its political dominance in Lagos. Opposition figures have, however, voiced concerns about the transparency and inclusiveness of the election process.
As the swearing-in of the new local officials approaches, attention will turn to how the newly elected chairmen and councillors plan to address local governance, infrastructure challenges, and youth engagement in their various jurisdictions.
