Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, has been named Africa’s top-performing university for Sustainable Development Goal 6 — Clean Water and Sanitation — by the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

The institution also received high global and national rankings in several other sustainability and research categories.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Wednesday by the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Adetunji Adeleye. He noted that Redeemer’s University stood out among thousands of universities worldwide due to its pioneering work in environmental sciences and public health.

According to the THE rankings, Redeemer’s University emerged first globally for SDG 6, which addresses water resource management, access to clean water, and sanitation services. This recognition was credited largely to the university’s African Centre of Excellence for Water and Environmental Science Research, a hub for innovation in water treatment, ecosystem preservation, and sustainable water usage across Africa.

The university also ranked first in Nigeria and sixth in Africa for SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being – reflecting the impact of its Institute of Genomics and Global Health (IGH). Formerly known as the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), the IGH has played a major role in tracking infectious diseases and developing genomic-based responses to health crises.

“These rankings reflect our unwavering commitment to the sustainable development of our continent,” Adeleye said. “They affirm Redeemer’s University as a trailblazer in sustainability, health research, and innovative academic practices.”

In addition to SDGs 6 and 3, Redeemer’s University also achieved first-place rankings in Nigeria for SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), signaling its strong institutional governance and dedication to economic empowerment.

It was also commended for its performance in SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), which examine how institutions are helping tackle global climate challenges and foster inter-institutional collaboration.

Reacting to the university’s latest feat, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shadrach Akindele attributed the success to years of dedicated research, collaboration, and a culture of excellence. He emphasized that while the recognition is an important milestone, it is only a starting point for even greater aspirations.

“This ranking validates our vision to be a world-class institution that drives impactful research and innovation,” Akindele said. “It is a call for continued investment, collaboration, and commitment to sustainable development.”

He further encouraged partnerships with academic institutions, government bodies, private sector players, and researchers focused on solving Africa’s biggest challenges through data, science, and policy solutions.
