The Federal Government has defended its decision to rename the University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID, as Muhammadu Buhari University, describing it as a deliberate gesture to honour the late former president’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s education sector and national development.
The Director of Press at the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo explained that the decision received the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a special session of the Federal Executive Council convened to pay tribute to Buhari.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, described the renaming as “a symbolic act of national gratitude,” stating that it not only acknowledges Buhari’s legacy but also seeks to immortalise his role in strengthening the country’s core institutions.
“This decision reflects President Tinubu’s deep respect and empathy for the late President Buhari,” the statement said. “It also underscores his belief that education is the bedrock of national development.”
Dr. Alausa went further to highlight several of Buhari’s landmark policy initiatives as justification for the tribute, including the Treasury Single Account, the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, and key anti-corruption drives.

According to the Ministry, these reforms laid the foundation for national stability, institutional transparency, and fiscal discipline.
The FEC session, presided over by Tinubu, reportedly featured a moving tribute from the President himself. Also in attendance were high-profile dignitaries including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who joined in honouring the late leader.
Buhari’s son, Yusuf Buhari, was present and spoke on behalf of the family, expressing their gratitude for the gesture.
Despite the official explanation, the renaming has sparked controversy across the country, particularly among students and alumni of the University of Maiduguri.
Many have voiced their disapproval on social media and through student platforms, insisting that UNIMAID’s name carries historical and cultural significance, especially for the North-East region.
Critics argue that the university’s identity, built over more than four decades, symbolizes resilience, academic excellence, and regional pride.
They say the decision was made without sufficient consultation with stakeholders and are urging President Tinubu to explore alternative ways of honouring Buhari that would not disrupt the university’s legacy.
