The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 11 students of Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, in connection with the brutal killing of two of their fellow students—a case that has shaken the Bichi community and prompted widespread outrage.

The deceased students, identified as Hamza Idris Tofawa and Umar Yusuf Dungurawa, were reportedly attacked by their classmates using locally-fabricated metal weapons known as “Gwale-Gwale.”

The motive for the deadly assault has not yet been disclosed, but authorities are treating it as a serious criminal case involving deliberate group violence.

Spokesperson of the police command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the arrests on Thursday, stating that all suspects were currently undergoing interrogation to determine their individual roles in the attack.

“Eleven students have been taken into custody in connection with this incident. Investigations are ongoing to establish the specific involvement of each suspect,” Kiyawa said.

He further assured the public that justice would be served, stressing that the command would leave no stone unturned in its quest for accountability.

The Kano State Commissioner for Education, Ali Makoda, has also directed a full-scale investigation into the matter. This directive was conveyed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Bashir Mohammad, during a condolence visit to the school on Wednesday.

“The Ministry of Education is deeply saddened by this horrific incident. We are fully committed to supporting law enforcement in identifying those responsible and taking corrective actions to prevent future tragedies,” Mohammad said.

A teacher at the school, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the event as one of the most harrowing moments in the school’s history. “It’s devastating to lose young lives in such a senseless and violent manner,” the teacher said.

As the investigation continues, the bodies of the two slain students have been deposited at the morgue of Bichi General Hospital for autopsy. The school remains under tight surveillance, and security personnel have been stationed around the premises to prevent any further unrest.
