The Korea International Cooperation Agency, KOICA, has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s educational landscape by expanding its Smart School initiative, aiming to integrate advanced digital learning tools across the nation’s public schools.

Specifically, KOICA has pledged to intensify its efforts in establishing Smart Schools throughout the country. This initiative, in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission, seeks to revolutionize the Nigerian education system by incorporating technology-driven teaching methods.

The Smart School project, which has already seen the establishment of 21 schools across various states, is set to expand further, with plans to increase the number to 37. These schools are equipped with modern digital classrooms, e-libraries, and science laboratories, providing students with access to quality education through innovative means.

KOICA’s Country Director, Mr. Son Sungil, emphasized the importance of this initiative during a recent stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja, stating, “We are not only individuals passionate about basic education but a collective force committed to shaping the future of learning and empowering the minds of the next generation through innovative and sustainable smart education in Nigeria.”

The collaboration between KOICA and UBEC has also led to the training of over 250 Nigerian educators in South Korea, equipping them with the skills necessary to operate and manage Smart Schools effectively. These trained educators are now instrumental in mentoring their peers and ensuring the successful implementation of the Smart School model across the country.

Furthermore, KOICA’s support extends beyond infrastructure and training. The agency has provided grants to top-performing Smart Schools, such as the Nasarawa Smart School, which received N3 million and laptops for its exemplary performance. This initiative aims to incentivize excellence and encourage other schools to adopt the Smart School model.

As Nigeria continues to embrace digital education, KOICA’s expanded commitment underscores the growing importance of international partnerships in achieving educational transformation. The Smart School project stands as a testament to the potential of technology in bridging educational gaps and preparing Nigerian students for the challenges of the future.
