The Nigeria Volleyball Federation NVBF, on Monday in Abuja, donated trees to all 35 clubs participating in the ongoing competition in Division 1 and 2 as part of a climate action campaign.

The presentation was made by the president of NVBF, Musa Nimrod at the closing ceremony of the first phase of the tournament at the outdoor volleyball court at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

According to Nimrod, the importance of the initiative is part of the Federation’s contribution to environmental preservation.

“This exercise is not just about playing volleyball. It’s about connecting the sport to climate action.

“We’ve seen firsthand how climate change is already affecting our sporting events.

” For instance, during the Division 2 matches played outdoors, unexpected heavy rainfall disrupted play.

:Flooding was widespread, making outdoor games increasingly challenging,” he said.

He urged teams to plant the trees in meaningful spaces, around volleyball courts or within their communities, to contribute to reforestation and environmental restoration.

“We encourage planting economic trees those that provide shade, fruits, and long-term value. Let’s bring back the culture of sitting under trees, relaxing, and benefiting from nature.

” Deforestation and rapid urban development are exposing our environment to more risks. We must act fast,” he said.

He noted that the objective of the federation is beyond organising matches.

“It is about empowering athletes and teams with knowledge and responsibility. We are not just asking our players to compete;

” We are encouraging them to take this message of environmental responsibility back to their homes, communities, and training grounds. Each team has received a tree seedling.

“They are not just trees; they symbolise growth, sustainability, and long-term impact,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria  reports that the 2025 National Division 1 and 2 Volleyball League is organised by the NVBF in collaboration with the Chief of Defence Staff.

The tournament is tagged ‘Chief of Defence Staff National Volleyball League,’ which remains one of Nigeria’s most prestigious volleyball competitions.

A total of 35 clubs participated in the competition, featuring male and female teams from across the country.

The competition, which started on Aug. 12, ended today(Monday)
