In a move that has sent ripples across Nigeria’s political landscape, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has officially withdrawn his presidential ambition for the 2027 general elections.

The announcement, which was made shortly after returning from Abuja following the PDP NEC Meeting, underscores his commitment to equity, unity, and the zoning principles of the Peoples Democratic Party .

Governor Bala Mohammed stated that his decision was driven by a desire to uphold the party’s zoning arrangement, which has allocated the presidential ticket to the Southern region. “What is most important to me is unity and peace within the PDP and the country as a whole. I agree to give the South a chance, for justice and democratic progress,” he declared.

The PDP’s National Executive Committee   recently ratified the zoning of the 2027 presidential ticket to the South, a resolution aimed at fostering internal balance and national inclusivity. This strategic shift effectively sidelines Northern contenders, including Mohammed, who had been considered a strong candidate within the party.

Despite widespread support from across the country, Bala Mohammed emphasized that his priority remains the preservation of democratic values and regional representation. “I have received immense encouragement from friends and supporters nationwide, but I believe in the greater good. Justice must prevail, and every region must have its moment at the helm,” he said.

He urged fellow PDP members to rally behind the party’s platform and approach the 2027 elections with unity and integrity. “Let us embrace this decision with strength and resolve. Our democracy depends on fairness and inclusion,” he added.

Political analysts view Bala Mohammed’s withdrawal as a significant gesture of statesmanship, potentially strengthening the PDP’s appeal in the South and reinforcing its commitment to rotational leadership. The party is expected to finalize its candidate selection at the upcoming national convention in Ibadan this November.

As the race for 2027 intensifies, the PDP’s internal cohesion and adherence to its zoning principles may prove pivotal in its bid to reclaim national leadership.
