Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State, has reaffirmed its 2025 policies banning students from owning mobile phones and cooking in hostels.
The university, founded by Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners Chapel), explained that the measures aim to strengthen discipline, reduce distractions from digital devices, and foster academic and spiritual focus among students.
Management also said cooking bans are designed to curb safety hazards in hostels and encourage reliance on school cafeterias.
But the announcement has stirred widespread debate on social media, with students, parents, and the public split between seeing the rules as protective or overly restrictive.
Supporters argue that Covenant’s approach reflects a strong commitment to molding disciplined graduates.
Clifford Chimaizuobi Igbo commented:
“Rules exist for a reason. If you cannot follow them, you may need to consider other schools. There are valid reasons behind these requirements.”
Similarly, Obinna Iheonu highlighted the school’s alternative communication methods:
“Students are allowed to use school internet-enabled tablets and laptops in school for connectivity. The school thinks phone is a major distraction. They communicate through email and WhatsApp.”
On the other hand, critics say the rules feel excessive. Desmond described the ban as a denial of independence:
“That’s really disappointing. Banning cooking and owning phones feels extreme and restrictive. It limits students’ independence, comfort, and ability to stay connected with family.”

Chibuike added that the school may be “policing young adults” instead of preparing them for real life:
“A child that wants to waste away will do so regardless. However, that’s the age people should be allowed to train themselves and adapt to what’s actually real. The world is not safe.”
Some responses were laced with humor. Shallom ADD+ quipped:
“Shey na today? And no be say them hide am from the public. Una sha Dey chase banger.”
