Smoke and flames engulfed the United Bank for Africa, UBA, branch on Lagos Island on Tuesday, sparking panic among staff and passersby as emergency teams rushed to the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire, which broke out in the early hours of the afternoon, sent workers scrambling for safety. Viral video footage circulating online showed smoke billowing out of the building’s upper floors as several employees attempted to escape through windows and emergency exits.
Although the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, preliminary accounts suggest it may have started from an electrical fault. The bank, located in a busy commercial area, was quickly surrounded by onlookers and traders from nearby shops, who expressed fear of the blaze spreading to adjacent buildings.
At press time, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service had not issued an official statement. However, emergency responders were seen deploying firefighting trucks and equipment to contain the flames. Security personnel cordoned off the affected area to prevent a stampede and to allow rescue operations to proceed.

“We just saw smoke coming out of the building, and then people started shouting ‘fire, fire!’ Some staff members were climbing down with help from others,” said a trader who operates close to the branch.
While there have been no confirmed casualties, unverified reports indicate that some workers sustained minor injuries while trying to escape. Authorities are expected to give a full update once the fire is fully extinguished and investigations begin.
Urban planners and safety experts have consistently warned about the risks posed by outdated electrical systems, poor maintenance, and the absence of fire drills in many corporate facilities.
The Lagos State government has repeatedly urged businesses to invest in modern fire detection equipment, sprinklers, and regular safety audits, but compliance has been uneven.
As of Tuesday evening, UBA management had not released an official statement addressing the incident. The bank, one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions with branches across Africa, is expected to reassure customers about the safety of their deposits and the continuity of its operations.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has urged the public to stay calm and avoid spreading unverified information, stressing that updates will be provided once the situation is under control.
For now, the images of smoke-filled skies over Lagos Island serve as a reminder of the fragility of safety in Nigeria’s busiest commercial hub—and the importance of preparedness in preventing tragedy.
