The relationship between Ademola Lookman and new Atalanta manager Ivan Juric has taken another twist as the Nigerian international was left out of the squad for the club’s UEFA Champions League opener against defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The Group Stage clash at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night was expected to be Lookman’s chance to reassert his importance to the Serie A side, but his absence confirmed that the standoff between player and club is far from resolved.
Lookman, 28, has not featured for Atalanta since the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign, despite returning from the summer break in good form during Nigeria’s international fixtures.
He had been tipped for a recall after scoring for the Super Eagles during the FIFA window earlier this month, but Juric made it clear that selection would depend on the player’s full commitment to the team.
“Every player has to give one hundred per cent for the shirt,” Juric was quoted as saying in Italian media reports. “I will not beg anyone to play for Atalanta. The club’s principles are clear.”
Club director Luca Percassi echoed the coach’s stance, adding that while Lookman remained a key figure in their plans, only players who were fully focused on the collective would be considered.
“We know how important Lookman is, but principles come first. He must be ready mentally and physically before returning,” Percassi told DAZN Italia.
Lookman’s exclusion marks the fourth straight competitive fixture he has missed under Juric. He had already been dropped for Atalanta’s opening three Serie A matches against Pisa, Parma, and Lecce.
The winger was a transfer target for Inter Milan during the summer, but the Bergamo club refused to sanction a move unless their €50 million valuation was met.
Turkish giants Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray also expressed late interest, but their domestic transfer window closed before a deal could be agreed.

Despite the ongoing saga, Lookman remains contracted to Atalanta at least until the January window. His situation leaves questions about whether he can reintegrate or will be permanently frozen out.
The club’s position suggests a path back remains possible, but only if he demonstrates renewed dedication.
Meanwhile, Atalanta are also without other key players for the PSG clash. Midfield lynchpin Ederson and striker Gianluca Scamacca are sidelined through injury, while defenders Sead Kolasinac and Mitchel Bakker are also unavailable. Juric’s squad will therefore face the reigning European champions severely depleted.
Lookman joined Atalanta in 2022 from RB Leipzig and quickly became one of their most effective attacking players. Last season, he netted 12 goals across competitions and played a decisive role in their run to the Europa League final.
His pace, direct dribbling, and eye for goal made him a fan favorite, and his absence has left a noticeable void in Atalanta’s attack.
For now, the Nigerian forward’s career in Bergamo hangs in the balance. With Atalanta back in Europe’s elite competition, the coming weeks will determine whether Lookman is restored to the fold or faces a longer exile.
