Arsenal have begun negotiations with Dutch defender Jurrien Timber over a new long-term deal, seeking to reward his consistent performances and ensure his future at the Emirates Stadium.

The move comes as part of the club’s broader strategy to secure the core of Mikel Arteta’s squad amid growing ambitions to challenge for both domestic and European honours.

Timber, 24, joined Arsenal from Ajax in the summer of 2023 for £34.4 million, arriving with a reputation as one of Europe’s most technically gifted and versatile defenders.

However, his debut campaign was cruelly cut short when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the opening Premier League match against Nottingham Forest.

The setback restricted him to only two appearances that season, raising concerns over whether he would recover his form and fulfil his potential.

Those doubts were emphatically silenced during the 2024/25 campaign, as Timber returned to play 51 matches across all competitions.

His commanding displays, composure on the ball, and ability to seamlessly switch between right-back and central defence made him an integral part of Arteta’s plans.

This season, he has continued to impress, helping Arsenal make a strong start in the league and Champions League.

According to BBC Sport, initial discussions have begun between the club and Timber’s representatives, with all parties expressing a willingness to reach an agreement.

His current contract runs until 2028, but Arsenal are keen to offer improved terms that reflect his growing importance and ward off potential interest from European rivals.

Arteta has consistently stressed the value of stability and continuity within his squad.

Timber’s renewal talks align with that vision, following recent extensions for key players such as William Saliba.

Negotiations are also ongoing with Bukayo Saka, who is expected to sign a new long-term deal in the coming months.

For Arsenal, securing Timber represents more than just retaining a top-level defender; it signals intent.

The Gunners have invested heavily in building a squad capable of competing with Manchester City and other elite clubs.

Locking down players like Timber, Saliba, and Saka ensures the team’s spine remains intact during what they hope will be a sustained period of success.

Timber’s resilience in overcoming injury has also won admiration among supporters. His journey from early disappointment to becoming a first-choice regular embodies the grit and determination Arteta has instilled in his squad.

At just 24, the Dutchman is entering his peak years, and Arsenal see him as a cornerstone of their future.

While the details of the proposed contract remain under wraps, the club’s swift move to open talks highlights their proactive approach in squad management.

For Timber, the extension would not only be a reward for his recovery and form but also a chance to cement his status as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders.

With Arsenal riding a wave of optimism and Timber thriving at the heart of their defence, both parties appear set on ensuring that their partnership lasts well beyond 2028.
