Nigeria’s Christian community is in mourning following the death of renowned international evangelist and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, who passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80.
The news of his death was announced in a statement released by his family and titled “Glorious Transition.”
The family described the preacher as a “faithful soldier of the cross” whose life and ministry were defined by unwavering commitment to evangelism, prayer, and the power of the gospel.
“With hearts full of gratitude, we celebrate the triumphant homegoing of Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, who passed on to glory on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80,” the family said. “A faithful soldier of the cross has been called to rest.”
Born in 1945, Uma Ukpai’s ministry spanned more than six decades, during which he became one of Nigeria’s most respected evangelists, hosting massive crusades and conferences that drew thousands across Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
His teachings emphasized faith, healing, and the power of prayer, earning him the reputation of a spiritual general and a father of modern evangelism in Nigeria.
The statement described him as a “founding father of faith, a loving husband, a devoted father, and a mentor to many,” adding that his life remained a testament to “God’s power and love.”

Ukpai’s evangelistic crusades, often characterized by powerful preaching and miracles, made him a household name in Nigeria’s Christian circles.
His outreach programmes touched millions of lives, fostering unity among different denominations and inspiring a new generation of Christian leaders.
“While we mourn his physical absence, we rejoice that he has finished his race and is now resting in eternal praise,” the family continued. They added that details of his burial arrangements would be released later.
Citing Philippians 1:21, the family concluded: “For indeed, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
Across social media and church networks, tributes have poured in from pastors, Christian leaders, and congregants who described Ukpai as “a man who lived for God and people.”
Many recalled his humility, consistency, and the influence of his sermons on faith and healing.
