Sen. Aliyu Wamakko, APC–Sokoto North has sponsored the training of 100 constituents on Solar Photovoltaic installation, maintenance and repair in Sokoto State.
The 21-day training, which commenced on Monday at the Sokoto Energy Research Centre of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, is designed to equip the participants with practical skills in renewable energy technologies.
Inaugurating the programme, Wamakko said the initiative was part of his efforts to align with the global transition toward renewable energy.
“This is one of the most desirable trainings our youths need in the 21st century to remain self-employed and contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.
Represented by his Director of Administration, Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar, Wamakko explained that the programme was carefully designed to complement the state government’s commitment to renewable energy development and to support Gov. Ahmed Aliyu’s Nine-point Smart Agenda.
He added that the training would enhance skills development, employment opportunities, empowerment, and social growth within the communities.
“Through solar energy, we can provide potable water, cook food, and reduce carbon emissions in our environment.
“The world is moving away from conventional energy sources to renewable ones, and solar remains one of the most viable options, especially for our state.
“Training our people in installation and maintenance will help us rely less on external technicians, thereby saving time and cost,” he stated.
Wamakko appreciated the management of the Sokoto Energy Research Centre for hosting the programme and urged the participants to make the most of the opportunity.

He disclosed that each participant would receive a transportation allowance throughout the training period, as well as start-up tools and funding upon completion.
Earlier, Prof. Mu’azu Musa, Director of the centre, said the training would expose the participants to various practical solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change.
He commended Wamakko for the initiative, describing it as timely and relevant to current global energy challenges.
“Renewable energy is now a vital component in addressing the effects of climate change caused by fossil fuel usage.
“Participants will be issued certificates after the training and will also have access to the Centre for further technical guidance,” Musa said.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Sokoto State Arabic Board, Alhaji Ahmed Altine, lauded Wamakko for his consistent efforts in supporting human capital development.
Altine described the gesture as part of the Senator’s long-standing commitment to community empowerment.
