A coalition of Igbo businessmen in the United States, under the banner of Njiko Amaka, has accused Omoyele Sowore and Atiku Abubakar of using the upcoming Free Nnamdi Kanu Now protest as a political strategy to obstruct justice and regain public relevance.

The group raised the alarm in a statement released on Tuesday, warning that the planned October 20 protest could undermine the ongoing trial of the detained Indigenous People of Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The statement, signed by Chiefs Emeka Ejidike the chairman and Okey Anosike the secretary, alleged that both Sowore, the African Action Congress presidential candidate, and Atiku, his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart in the 2023 elections, were exploiting Kanu’s case for personal political gain.

“We have watched with concern the rhetoric of self-serving politicians who lost relevance at the polls and now want to use the plight of our brother, Nnamdi Kanu, to score cheap political points,” the group said.

According to Njiko Amaka, Sowore’s recent activism around Kanu’s case is suspicious, given his own pending criminal charges for allegedly making derogatory statements about President Bola Tinubu.

“Why is Sowore suddenly interested in leading protests for Kanu while battling his own legal troubles?” the group queried.

The coalition also questioned Atiku’s motives, noting his silence on other detentions involving northern suspects. “Atiku is from the North, just like Mohammed Usman, alias Khalid al-Barnawi, the mastermind of the 2011 UN building bombing. Why has he never protested for his release but suddenly finds passion for Kanu’s case?” the statement asked.

Describing Atiku’s actions as “crying more than the bereaved,” the group accused him of hypocrisy and political manipulation. “This is not the time for distractions,” Njiko Amaka warned, urging Nigerians to “see through the antics of fifth columnists who do not mean well for Ndigbo or Kanu.”

The group expressed confidence in ongoing political efforts led by southeastern leaders, including Enugu Governor Peter Mbah, who has hinted that discussions are underway for a possible political resolution to Kanu’s case.

“We have governors, senators, and representatives capable of championing our cause. We do not need opportunists seeking cheap relevance,” the statement concluded.

Njiko Amaka urged supporters of Kanu to remain calm and allow the court process to continue without political interference.
