Nigeria’s football development received a major boost as scouts from English clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Cambridge United FC visited Abuja to identify and nurture young talents.
The visit was organised by Abzchain Resources Football Club, whose Head Consultant, Francis Okooboh, reaffirmed the club’s commitment to developing grassroots football and creating pathways for Nigerian players to access professional opportunities abroad.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Okooboh described the visit as “a rare opportunity for young Nigerian footballers to be assessed directly by professional club scouts from Europe.”

“We are thrilled to welcome scouts from Tottenham Hotspur, a Premier League team, and Cambridge United, a League Two side.
Our goal is to leverage this partnership to take our football endeavours to the next level,” Okooboh said.
He explained that Abzchain Resources FC focuses on technical, tactical, and physical player development while also engaging parents on realistic career guidance for their children.
According to him, the company has recorded success with several players who are now studying or playing professionally overseas.
Okooboh also highlighted the need for merit-based player selection in Nigerian football, lamenting that opportunities often depend on connections rather than talent.
“Nigeria has world-class players, but our system must prioritise honesty and fairness.
Abroad, scouts evaluate players based purely on ability not wealth or influence.
If we adopt that mindset, our football will flourish,” he said.
He reiterated Abzchain’s vision of nurturing homegrown players capable of competing globally while working closely with the Nigeria Football Federation .
“We are proud to be affiliated with the NFF, and some of our players have already represented Nigeria at the U-15 level.
Together, we can build a stronger, merit-driven football future for the nation,” Okooboh added
Ryan Hervel, a former professional footballer and coach with Tottenham Hotspur FC, expressed excitement about Nigeria’s football potential.
“Nigeria’s natural creativity and flair remind us of legends like Jay-Jay Okocha.
We believe Nigerian players deserve equal opportunities with their European counterparts,” Hervel said.
Similarly, Emmanuel N’daw, a former professional player and current coach/scout at Cambridge United FC, described the collaboration as promising.
“We’re open to players aged 12 to 19 and are focusing on potential over age.
Our mission is to identify top talents and provide them a platform to succeed,” N’daw said.
Other officials at the event included Ene Egbe, Head of Administration, and Isa Muhammed, Assistant Coach and Fitness Trainer.
The press conference also marked the start of a five-day football scouting tournament featuring 14 teams, including:
Abzchain Resource FA, Blinks FA, Defence Strikers FC, Ramsaky FC, Camplex FC, Zealified FA, E and R Fashion FA, Dream Stars FC, Otisco FC, Access FA, Faith Family Academy (Junior and Senior), Sarkin Daji FA, and Rose FA.
The opening match saw Abzchain Resource FA face Blinks FA immediately after the briefing.
The five-day scouting event will run from Monday to Friday in Abuja, providing a direct platform for Nigerian youth players to be discovered by top European clubs.
