A petrol tanker crashed in the early hours of Friday in Jaji, Kaduna State, spilling its contents of Premium Motor Spirit petrol along the busy Kaduna–Zaria highway.
In a statement on X on Saturday, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, confirmed that the incident occurred on October 31, 2025, attributing it to the impatience of the tanker driver.
“Upon receiving the alert, the Head of NEMA Kaduna Operations Office, Mallam Suleiman Muhammad, activated the Agency’s Emergency Response Team. The Search and Rescue Unit arrived promptly at the scene, where officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps had already commenced response activities,” the statement read.

According to NEMA, the FRSC team, led by Kaduna Sector Commander Tijjani Iliyasu, supervised the safe evacuation of the tanker’s fuel into another truck provided for the operation a swift action that prevented what could have been a catastrophic explosion.
The accident caused major traffic congestion along both lanes of the Kaduna–Zaria expressway, forcing authorities to divert motorists through Amana, Mai Madaci, and Turunku communities to ease movement.
“NEMA, FRSC, security agencies, and other stakeholders worked collaboratively to ensure public safety and ease traffic congestion,” the agency stated.
It further urged drivers to exercise patience and adhere to traffic directives as normal vehicular movement gradually resumed in the area.
The latest crash comes barely two weeks after a separate petrol tanker explosion in Niger State claimed 45 lives and left several others injured at Essa community in Katcha Local Government Area, highlighting renewed calls for stricter road safety enforcement for petroleum transporters across Nigeria.
