Germany has praised Nigeria’s ongoing campaign against terrorism, reaffirming its commitment to deepen bilateral security cooperation as both countries mark 65 years of diplomatic relations.

The commendation came during a high-level meeting in Berlin between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and Germany’s Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul.

The discussions, held under the framework of the Nigeria–Germany Bi-National Commission, focused on strengthening defence ties, enhancing intelligence sharing, and expanding humanitarian support to communities affected by violent extremism, particularly in the Lake Chad Basin.

According to a statement issued by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Senior Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy to Tuggar, Germany described Nigeria as a “valued and reliable partner” in the European Union’s efforts to combat radical Islamist extremism.

Wadephul lauded Nigeria’s military campaigns against Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other extremist elements, noting that Nigeria remains central to regional stability in West and Central Africa.

The German government also acknowledged Nigeria’s leadership in multinational security formations, including the Multinational Joint Task Force operating in the Lake Chad Basin.

Germany emphasised that Nigeria has demonstrated consistent commitment to regional peace through collaboration with neighbouring countries such as Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.

During the meeting, both ministers reaffirmed their desire to broaden cooperation beyond military support.

Germany pledged continued assistance in areas such as counterterrorism training, police reform, capacity building for security agencies, and intelligence-sharing mechanisms designed to prevent cross-border terror financing and arms trafficking.

In addition, Germany committed to strengthening humanitarian interventions in areas ravaged by insurgency.

These include support for internally displaced persons, rebuilding of local infrastructure, education initiatives, and livelihood programmes aimed at restoring stability in conflict-affected communities.

Ambassador Tuggar welcomed Germany’s continued partnership, noting that Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts will benefit from sustained international cooperation.

He emphasised that as terrorism evolves, partnerships focused on technology, intelligence, and community resilience are essential for long-term peace.

The renewed commitments, officials said, reflect the long-standing friendship between the two nations, which spans economic development, energy transition, cultural exchange, and governance reforms alongside security cooperation.

As Nigeria continues to confront security challenges, the German government’s support reinforces international confidence in the country’s approach to dismantling extremist networks while stabilising the wider Lake Chad region.
